Practicum Program
The History Group is committed to providing opportunities for students to gain practical research experience in a professional setting. Our Practicum Program was formulated in 2008 to expose students to our company and to help them develop a number of research skills from diverse areas. We recognize the importance of work experience in collaboration with education in order for students to prepare themselves for their future career paths.
The History Group believes that students need to learn highly transferable skills and gain relevant work experience to start their careers. Students need to be able to apply the knowledge they have learned in a professional setting in order for them to relate their degrees to the working world. We have designed a program to help students use the knowledge they have learned in the classroom to further develop their research skills within the parameters of a professional environment.
The History Group is committed to the discovery and preservation of history. Therefore students that join the program are given the opportunity to produce at least one publishable written submission related to a noteworthy person, place or event. To highlight the hard work and effort that our practicum students put into their research and writing, we post their project on our blog and welcome feedback from the online historical community.
In addition to creating a publishable work, our practicum students are given hands on experience working with research databases, archival files and documents, and various research planning tools. MA students in our practicum program are given the chance to undertake research planning – an intrinsic part of the professional research process that differs greatly from the style and method of planning done in the academic setting.
